Choosing Aluminium Carpet Strips for Floor Transitions

Identify the Carpet Build-Up

An aluminium carpet strip should be selected around the actual carpet assembly and the surface beside it. Describe the carpet, its backing and any underlay, then provide the final levels at the junction. A single nominal carpet thickness may not explain how the finished edge will sit.

Ask the installer which dimensions control the intended detail. The compressed edge and the visible pile can be different considerations, so a section drawing is more useful than an overhead photograph alone. Include the adjacent flooring material and show whether the junction is level or has a change in height.

Distinguish Edge Grip from Decorative Coverage

A gripper profile and a cover profile do not necessarily perform the same function. Integrated teeth, the shape of the cover and the section underneath all matter when discussing the proposed assembly. Choose a reference by its detail, not simply by a similar colour or a wide visible face.

The catalogue examples below include carpet cover and gripper designs with their own published sizes. These examples help start a product-specific discussion. Their dimensions should not be treated as interchangeable, and the installer should confirm how the selected detail will retain and finish the particular carpet.

Check the Transition to the Adjacent Floor

Describe whether the carpet meets tile, wood, laminate or another finish. The profile needs to be discussed in relation to both surfaces, including the intended gap and final levels. A cover that looks suitable from above may not match the section shown in the project drawing.

Where the junction has particular movement or installation requirements, identify them explicitly. Do not assume that a decorative strip provides a defined movement capability. Keep the section drawing, fixing discussion and product reference together so the supplier and installer are reviewing the same detail.

Specify the Visible Finish

A transition strip is often viewed next to materials with very different texture and colour. State the desired metal appearance and distinguish a polished finish from a matt or brushed one. A generic description such as gold or silver may leave important visual differences unresolved.

Use an approved sample when the appearance needs to match a wider interior scheme or a previous purchase. Record the finish reference with the model rather than on a separate informal message. This makes it easier to identify the right combination when several carpet details share the same order.

Consider Handling and Later Identification

Ask how the selected section will be packed for its ordered length and finish. Protection should address visible faces as well as the shape of the profile. Package identification is also valuable where several similar carpet strips are being delivered for different locations.

Keep a clear record of the model, finish, drawing and any installation information supplied. This supports repeat enquiries and reduces the risk of ordering a visually similar but dimensionally different strip. Any project-specific performance or replacement requirement should be stated before the quotation is approved.

Make the Carpet-Edge Schedule Clear

Separate different carpet junctions into individual line items. The quantity for a gripper design should not be combined with a decorative cover simply because the finishes match. A small schedule with consistent references is easier to sample and check than a series of unrelated photographs.

  • Carpet build-up, adjacent flooring and finished levels.
  • Model reference, cross-section and the required edge-retention detail.
  • Finish reference, required lengths and quantity for each profile.
  • Packing, identification, delivery destination and any sample approval.
